How common is arthritis?
Of the worlds population, 90 percent will eventually develop some form of arthritis. This is due, in most part, to the life spans in todays world.
Arthritis is often thought of as a sign of aging, although it can affect young as well as older people. In fact, Arthritis is one of the most common diseases in humans.
Records in the united kingdom show that around 20 million people suffer with arthritis, 8 million of whom consult their doctor for treatment. Osteoarthritis is responsible for 5 million of those 20 million sufferers, with rheumatoid arthritis affecting a further 1 million individuals. Some 15 thousand children are affected by juvenile arthritis. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis affect many more girls than boys; 86 percent of all cases are girls.
In the United States, which has one of the most diverse ethnic populations, nearly 40 million Americans have some type of arthritis. This is projected to rise to almost 60 million by 2020. Of these, approximately 23 million women of all ages are affected by arthritis. In Canada, 4 million people suffer from arthritis, thats 1 in 7 people. In other countries, where similar statistics are available, the proportions of instances have proven to be similar.
